I took the following pictures at the Hermann Park Butterfly Center in Houston, Texas. This is a nice place to get up close to butterflies. Tripods are allowed in the facility and attendants are friendly, but space inside the Butterfly Center is rather cramped. This time around when I was there taking pictures there were a lot of people, so I didn't use a tripod at all (although I brought one with me). People are allowed to touch the butterflies, which I don't like, not because they constantly interfere with my picture taking, but because some of the butterflier suffer from broken wings which I suspect is a result of people's excessive and inappropriate affection
Since I had to handhold my camera to take all these pictures, I used ISO 400 film --- Fuji Sensia II 400, Fuji Provia F 100 pushed two stops and Fuji Superia 400. All films were rated at ISO 320. I used a Canon A2 with a Tamron SP 90 F/2.8 Macro lens for the two slide films and a Canon Rebel G with a Canon EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 "IS" USM lens for the negative film. The EF 28-135mm "IS" lens proved to be a surprisingly good lens for handheld macro work thanks to its Image Stabilizer feature and its close focusing capability --- in literature it's said to have a 1:5 magnification (20% lifesize) at 135mm but I suspect the actual magnification is more than that, maybe 1:3 or something, which is nearly sufficient for close-ups for large insects and flowers.
The following pictures were taken with a Canon Reble G and a Canon EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 "IS" USM lens and Fuji Superia 400 film rated at ISO 320. I cropped the pictures a little bit due to the lens' not-quite-adequate magnification.
